The beautiful flavors remain fresh throughout, the tannins are dense, but unbelievably soft, and the finish is luxuriously long. Deeply colored, the 2012 Napa Valley Petite Sirah is a classic example of the full-bodied, rich varietal.

92 Points - Wine Advocate

"Beautiful aromas of lavender, acacia flowers, blueberries, black raspberries, licorice and graphite emerge from this full-bodied, rich Petite Sirah. While approachable because of the vintage’s sweet tannins, it will age easily for 15-20 years.” - Robert Parker, October 2014

92 Points - International Wine Report

"This opens with aromas of milk chocolate, roasted figs, and black pepper with coffee grounds. Leading to flavors of blueberry, anise, cassis, in this mineral driven effort.” - Owen Bargreen, November 2015

90 Points - Wine Enthusiast

"The winery's larger bottling of the variety, one it has mastered for decades, this wine is a mix of baked plum and rustic leather notes. It's softly tannic, with pronounced jolts of tobacco and black pepper. With small amounts of other Rhône varieties, from Syrah to Viognier, it meanders to the finish, with a distinct trace of minerality.” - Virginie Boone,  November 2015

Tasting Notes

Deeply colored, the 2012 Napa Valley Petite Sirah is a classic example of the full-bodied, rich varietal. Generous in flavor, with blackberry, black cherry, mulberry and subtle hints of rose tea, vanilla, graphite, clove spice and sweet tobacco, this wine exhibits the full spectrum of Petite Sirah’s signature characteristics. The beautiful flavors remain fresh throughout, the tannins are dense, but unbelievably soft, and the finish is luxuriously long.

Vineyard Notes

Grapes from the vineyards located on our estate’s deep, rocky soils make up the backbone of this Napa Valley Petite Sirah. Carefully selected fruit from both northern vineyards in Calistoga and St. Helena and southern vineyards in Oakville, Oak Knoll and Coombsville are added to intensify and broaden the wine’s profile to include floral, spice and fruit characteristics. Petite Sirah is a varietal that is enhanced by the deliberate diversity of our vineyard sites.

Vintage Notes

The 2012 vintage will be remembered for its abundance of high-quality fruit. The season began with exceptional, moderate weather that brought virtually no harm to the grapes all the way through fruit-set, and the long, mild days continued well into the summer. A cooler-than-normal period hit at the end of September, which allowed for the preservation of ideal fruit aromatics, freshness and natural acidity.

Winemaking Notes

Continuing the same time-honored techniques that have made Petite Sirah one of our winery’s staples, Winemaker Christophe Paubert practiced simple and traditional methods to show the uniqueness of the Petite Sirah fruit. Avoiding over extraction, the wine went through a relatively short maceration period (9-12 days on average) that included fermentation, and two of these lots were co-fermented with Viognier to reinforce the floral character of the Petite Sirah.  The wine aged for 12 months in American oak barrels (25% new), allowing the spiciness of the oak to complement the natural spice character of the varietal. The final blend included small amounts of Syrah, Grenache, Carignane and Mourvèdre to bring further complexity to the finished wine.

Varietal Composition: 75% Petite Sirah, 12% Syrah, 8% Grenache, 2% Carignane, 2% Mourvedre, 1% Viognier
Alc. 14.1%
