Tasting Notes

The Stags' Leap 2020 Coombsville Cabernet Sauvignon is a captivating wine with an alluring dark ruby color tinged with purple. Its delightful aromas of violet, lavender, plum, blackberry, and cassis seamlessly intertwine with oak spice notes. On the palate, you'll savor the leathery richness and ripe plums, supported by grippy tannins that add structure. For immediate enjoyment, decanting is recommended, but this wine also holds excellent aging potential for over 10 years when properly cellared.

“Very concentrated and focused aromas of black currants, violets and green peppercorns followed by tobacco leaves, blanched coffee beans and a hint of black ink. Full-bodied, firm yet finely grained juicy tannins with soft acidity. Sound and energetic. Beautiful drinkability, too. Aged for 20 months in 50% new French oak. Drink or hold.” — James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com

Winemaking

This small bottling is a barrel selection of Coombsville’s most expressive lots. Special care was taken during extraction and maceration to maintain concentration and approachability. Custom toasted, very low-impact barrels were hand-selected to support the wine during maturation without imparting excessive flavor. Each component was aged separately in French oak barrels (52% new) for 19 months and blended just prior to bottling. Keeping the lots separate throughout aging allowed our winemakers to monitor and evaluate each lot individually, coaxing each to its maximum potential and complexity.

Vintage

The 2020 season will be remembered for factors beyond the typical harvest season. It was a warm, dry winter and the rain and cooler weather didn’t arrive until the end of March. While the mild spring season was a great early start, summer brought very cool mornings and very warm days. Then harvest was interrupted by wildfires across California, which came as grapes started to be picked, and we were very fortunate that none of our vineyards were in the areas of the active fires. The white wine harvest started in mid to late August while the red wine harvest was smaller yielding and proved to be one of the most challenging in history, but our winemakers remained optimistic and very complimentary of the high quality achieved.

Vineyard

Our winemakers have always admired Cabernet Sauvignon fruit from Coombsville, referring to it as the “Pauillac” of Napa Valley. Year after year, the appellation yields some of the region’s most distinctive and concentrated Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine captures a pure expression of Napa’s southeastern corner with its unique elevation and cooler terroir. Most of the blend comes from Garvey Vineyard. This and other long-standing relationships with some of the most highly regarded growers in Coombsville ensure the wine exemplifies the excellent structure, concentrated fresh flavors, and significant tannins this appellation is renowned for.
