Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

The 2018 Atlas Peak Cabernet Sauvignon is a high elevation wine with deep, concentrated color and expressive aromas of blackberry and black currant alongside brambly chapparal herb notes of wild sage and bay leaf. The fruit on the palate is focused and fresh, while additional layers of spiced cinnamon, nutmeg and clove, all hints from the well-integrated oak ageing and iconic terroir character, support the full-bodied, richly textured wine. The wine is full and robust with well-balanced firm tannins, creating a rich mouthfeel, finishing with lively acidity and a lengthy mouthwatering finish.

Winemaking

Winemaking

This small bottling of Atlas Peak Cabernet Sauvignon is a barrel selection of the most expressive lots from the Atlas Peak appellation. This blend was fermented separately in French oak barrels (54% new) for 20 months and blended just prior to bottling. Custom-toasted, very low impact barrels of new French oak were hand-selected, which supported the wine during maturation but did not impart excessive flavors and helped to keep tannins in check. Keeping the lots separate throughout fermentation and aging allowed Christophe to monitor and evaluate each lot individually, coaxing each to its maximum potential and complexity.

Christophe Paubert - Winemaker

For Christophe Paubert, Winemaker and General Manager at Stags’ Leap Winery, the identity of a wine is found through the terroir. Christophe’s career has spanned the industry from sales to winemaking, and his impressive background includes positions at Chateau d’Yquem and Gruaud-Larose as well as projects in Chile, Spain and Washington State. But it was the terroir of Stags’ Leap that drew him to California.

Vintage

Vintage

The Napa Valley region enjoyed a stunning, near picture-perfect 2018 growing season including good winter rains, mild spring weather and steady temperatures throughout that allowed for even flowering and bud break. These ideal growing conditions were followed by a cool, even and slow-paced harvest which allowed the winery to vinify wines at a gentle pace. The resulting 2018 wines are of very high quality with lower alcohol, concentrated flavors, color and excellent acidity.

Napa Valley AVA

Napa Valley

Vineyard

Winemaker Christophe Paubert has always loved Cabernet Sauvignon fruit from the Atlas Peak appellation, as it’s been a part of the backbone for our esteemed Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignons for many years, and this 2018 vintage was the perfect year to highlight the exceptional fruit from this AVA in this small-lot bottling. Atlas Peak is one of the most prominent peaks in the Napa Valley and is renowned for its mountain-fruit character. At an elevation of 2,663 feet, the vineyards along the western slopes of the Vaca Range are steep, rugged, and difficult to farm but the incredible fruit quality and flavor development reward the effort. Although the area grows many Bordeaux varietals, Cabernet Sauvignon excels in this high elevation environment. The grapes for this wine come from Briarstone Vineyard, off Soda Canyon Road, where rocky loam and volcanic soils contribute to the distinctive character. This AVA cools down quickly at night, despite the increased sunlight during the day, and the significant diurnal temperature variations contribute to the balance of acidity found in this Cabernet.
