Behind the Scenes of our 2022 Amparo Rosé

Behind the Scenes of our 2022 Amparo Rosé

Unearth the secrets of our grenache vines and explore the magic of rosé winemaking. Learn how our latest vintage is perfected with a hint of Carignane, giving it a unique flavor profile. Plus, take the leap and try our Watermelon Basil Wine Cocktail recipe - a refreshing mix that expertly highlights the crisp, fruity notes of our Amparo Rosé. Perfect for summertime entertaining.

Our Amparo Rosé is produced from grenache grapes planted at the Gamble Ranch Vineyard in Oakville, California. The vineyard has rocky soils that produce intense, concentrated grapes that are well-suited to making rosé.

To balance some of this intensity, we also pull grenache grapes from the Frediani Vineyard in Calistoga. Based in the northernmost part of Napa Valley, this warm region vineyard consistently produces some of the most refined grenache in the Valley and adds a lovely softness to the Amparo Rosé.

Vine to Wine

After being hand-harvested, the grapes are brought into the winery to undergo a 24-hour maceration period. During this process, the juice is gently “bled” off the grape skins in a traditional saignée method of rosé winemaking. At the end, the wine will be imbued with just the right balance of color and flavor.

Right after this process is complete, the wine is transferred to neutral oak barrels. The neutrality of these barrels helps capture the varietal’s natural acidity and delicate fruit flavors. The wine ages for about four months—just the right amount of time to develop flavors while preserving its natural freshness.

Before bottling, our winemaking team will pull from each of the barrels and make sure the colors and flavors are where they want them. For the 2022 vintage, a small amount of Carignane was added to bring more fruit intensity to the wine.
Made in a dry style, the 2022 vintage of the Amparo Rosé has a lovely bright pink hue and vibrant aromas of fresh cherry, strawberry shortcake and pomegranate.

On the palate, juicy watermelon, red raspberry and orange blossom jump out to remind you of the best of summer.

Upon first sip you’ll notice the crispness of the wine and lithe, mouthwatering texture. This is a rosé that is delicious and refreshing on its own but will also pair well with lighter warm weather fare like seafood and salads.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups of seedless watermelon cubes
  • 1 bottle of Amparo Rosé
  • 1/2 cup of simple syrup
  • A handful of fresh basil leaves
  • Juice of 1 lime
  • Sparkling water (optional)
  • Ice cubes

Instructions

  1. In a blender, blend the watermelon cubes until you have a smooth purée. Strain this mixture into a large pitcher to remove any remaining solids.
  2. Add the simple syrup to the pitcher along with the lime juice. Mix well.
  3. Pour in the bottle of Amparo Rosé. Stir gently to mix.
  4. Tear the basil leaves into smaller pieces and add them to the pitcher. Allow the mixture to chill in the refrigerator for at least an hour to let the flavors meld.
  5. When ready to serve, pour the cocktail into glasses over ice, top with a splash of sparkling water if desired, and garnish with a sprig of basil. Enjoy!
