Chardonnay is a classic for a reason. It’s a versatile white wine with a diversity of flavor profiles and textures that can impress almost anyone. The grape has a long history and roots in Burgundy, France, but has become a California star – one of the most widely planted white varieties in the state. It’s one of the three base grapes in Champagne and a cornerstone of most wine lists. Basically, Chardonnay is a big deal.
Because of its wide appeal and versatility, Chardonnay’s a great choice to pour at a dinner party. We’ve collected a list of our favorite pairings for our latest vintage, Stags’ Leap Winery 2023 Napa Valley Chardonnay, to help you plan.
Chardonnay’s Spectrum of Flavors
Chardonnay isn’t just one wine. It’s a spectrum of wines that varies broadly depending on where it’s grown, who grows it, and how it’s made.
The basics: Chardonnay is almost always fruit-forward with notes of apple, pear, citrus, and other tropical fruits on the palate.
Cool climate Chardonnays will be crisp and mineral-forward. Think light, fruity, and bright. You can expect a drink that is pleasingly high acidity that's super refreshing.
Warmer climates will create a Chardonnay that is rich and creamy, with a luscious, bold mouthfeel. These wines will be weightier and, while they’re still fruit-forward, will have hints of flavors like toast, as well as ripe, even grilled, peach, mango, and pineapple.
Some Chardonnays undergo malolactic fermentation. This process converts tart malic acid that's a natural product of the winemaking process into lactic acid, which gives the Chardonnay a creamy mouthfeel and buttery flavor.
Oak aging transforms Chardonnay. If you choose a Chardonnay that has been aged in oak, you can expect a fuller-bodied wine with different, but complex, flavors. Lightly oaked Chardonnay will still support the wine’s natural fruit flavors, but will have subtle notes of toast and vanilla. Heavily oaked Chardonnay is going to be much creamier, more buttery, and have pronounced flavors of toast, vanilla, butterscotch, clove, and caramel. .
Stags’ Leap Winery 2023 Napa Valley Chardonnay is a versatile choice that encapsulates all the best parts of the Chardonnay spectrum. It’s crafted in Carneros, which is cooler than most areas of Napa Valley, and boasts a ripe and full palate with flavors of Golden Delicious apples, Asian pear, and lemon curd. Spiced oak notes of vanilla, brioche toast, and ginger complement the fruit and perfume of exotic floral notes. Full-bodied with a creamy texture, the finish is long and satisfying, highlighted by hints of lychee and a beautiful mineral character.
Chicken
Chicken is our go-to for Chardonnay. Opt for a rich cream sauce to bring out the oaky notes of the wine, or sauté to keep the meal light and fresh. We love pairing Chardonnay with chicken piccata. The lightly breaded and fried chicken is made with capers, lemon, and wine. Its brightness will stand up to the wine’s acidity.
Seafood
For an elevated dinner, cold-water lobster is a classic pairing with Chardonnay. Lobster has a subtle, sweet flavor that balances well with the flavors of a smooth Chardonnay. We recommend cooking the lobster in a rich butter sauce and serving it with a spritz of lemon to complement the brightness of the wine. And since the lobster’s flavor is mild, it works with oaked or unoaked Chardonnay.
Shrimp will also work extremely well with Chardonnay. We love serving grilled shrimp skewers with light veggies as an appetizer at our dinner parties, which allows for light sipping before the main course. Like the lobster, shrimp prepared in a rich, buttery cream sauce is an outstanding choice for a main course with a glass of Chardonnay.
Caesar Salad
Caesar salad is having a (greatly deserved) moment. Wow your dinner guests by opening your meal with an upscale Caesar salad paired perfectly with a crisp glass of Chardonnay. We recommend making a traditional Caesar dressing with anchovies. The wine will cut through the salt of the anchovies and the creamy texture of the dressing and create a stunning balance. If you want to serve Caesar salad as a main course, sautéed chicken or grilled shrimp make an excellent protein to top the salad.
Charcuterie
Chardonnay is the perfect wine to pair with a big, bold charcuterie spread. The wine’s acidity helps it to stand up to bold flavors. We recommend cheeses with a creamy texture, like brie. For meats, opt for salami, prosciutto, or even pâté. Avoid spicy meats and cheeses, as the heat will overpower the wine’s flavor.

Frequently Asked Questions
When is Chardonnay “in season”?
Chardonnay really is perfect for any time of year. We recommend enjoying an unoaked, crisp Chardonnay in the summer and a rich Chardonnay that has undergone malolactic fermentation in the winter. However, it really is a versatile wine for any season or taste.
Can I age Chardonnay?
Absolutely. Like reds, there are some that are made to age and some that are meant to be enjoyed upon release. Chardonnays with a rich, full-bodied structure, like those crafted by Stags’ Leap Winery are friendly to the cellaring process. When a Chardonnay ages, you can expect notes of toast, caramel, nuts, and honey to develop on the palate. The texture will become more rich, and the color will deepen into a gorgeous gold color.
What temperature should I serve Chardonnay?
Most Chardonnays are best enjoyed between 50°F and 55°F. For an oaked Chardonnay, the serving temperature can be increased slightly to around 58°F. Never over-chill your Chardonnay. This can mute the wine’s crisp, complex flavors.
