93+ points - Wine Advocate

“Another brilliant wine from Christophe Paubert is the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Coombsville. There are 545 cases of this blockbuster Cabernet Sauvignon that was aged 18 months in 75% new French oak. Loads of crushed rock minerality and crème de cassis along with licorice and floral notes jump from the glass of this opaque purple wine. Big, bold, primordial, and broodingly backward, this is an impressive wine for connoisseurs. Forget it for 4-5 years and drink it over the following 25+ years.” - Robert Parker, March 2016

Tasting Notes

Rich and pure, the 2012 Coombsville Cabernet Sauvignon is berry driven with flavors of blackberry, blueberry, currant, cherry and wonderfully intricate notes of dark chocolate and forest floor. Its powerful, mouthfilling tannins frame the fresh and concentrated flavors, with an underlying minerality that further adds complexity.

Vineyard Notes

Winemaker Christophe Paubert has always admired the Cabernet Sauvignon fruit from Coombsville for its concentration and fresh aromatics.  Year after year the appellation yields some of the most concentrated and distinctive Cabernet Sauvignon in Napa Valley, and 2012 vintage marks the debut of this bottling.  This wine captures a pure expression of Napa’s southeastern corner and its unique elevation and cooler terroir.  Long-standing relationships with some of the most highly regarded growers in Coombsville ensure this wine exemplifies the excellent structure, concentrated fresh flavors and significant tannins of this celebrated appellation.  The majority of the blend comes from Greco Vineyard, with the remaining fruit coming from Garvey and Keldon Vineyards, all located within a mile of each other.

Vintage Notes

The 2012 vintage will be remembered for its abundance of high-quality fruit that showcased plenty of fine grained, powdery tannins. The season began with exceptional, moderate weather that brought virtually no harm to the grapes all the way through fruit-set, and the long, mild days continued well into the summer. A cooler-than-normal period hit at the end of September, which allowed for the preservation of ideal fruit aromatics, freshness and natural acidity.

Winemaking Notes

This small bottling of Coombsville Cabernet Sauvignon is a barrel selection of the most expressive lots from this highly regarded appellation.  This inaugural blend was fermented separately in French oak barrels (75% new) for 18 months and blended just prior to bottling.  Custom-toasted, very low impact barrels of new French oak were hand-selected, which supported the wine during maturation but did not impart excessive flavors.  Keeping the lots separate throughout fermentation and aging allowed Christophe to monitor and evaluate each lot individually, coaxing each to its maximum potential and complexity.
