Vintage 2013
Wine Type Red
Varietal Red Wine Blend
Region Napa Valley
Winemaker Christophe Paubert

The Investor is a red wine that beautifully blends together the unique flavors and expressions of Merlot, Petite Sirah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec, resulting in a powerful, yet approachable assemblage with significant fruit presence. The Merlot contributes fresh red berry aromatics and a soft, velvety texture to balance the power of Petite Sirah, which adds concentration, tannins, spice and blueberry flavors. The Cabernet Sauvignon further increases the final blend’s complexity and depth and the Malbec’s incredibly vibrant floral aromatics heighten the blend’s freshness.

"Aromas of blueberries, blackberries and slate follow through to a full body, ultra-fine tannins and a focused and pure finish" - James Suckling, May 2016

90 Points - Wine Advocate

“A blend of 38% Merlot, 32% Petite Sirah, 18% Cabernet Sauvignon and 12% Malbec aged in a combination of French and American oak for 16 months, the 2013 Proprietary Red The Investor is an intriguing combination of grapes. Stags’ Leap winemaker Christophe Paubert (from Bordeaux) has produced an opaque purple wine with notes of blackcurrants, blueberry, white flowers, a full-bodied constitution, impressive purity and moderate tannins in the finish. It needs several years of bottle age and should drink well for 15 or more years.” - James Suckling, March 2016

Tasting Notes

Reflective of the winery’s ability to combine power with elegance, the 2013 vintage of The Investor is rich in fresh fruit but also captivating for its notes of vanilla bean, rose and forest floor. It’s an instant pleaser with generous, concentrated flavors of blackberry, blueberry, plum, cherry, and fine-grained, soft tannins.

Vineyard Notes

The majority of the Petite Sirah fruit comes from the Stags’ Leap estate and grapes from a diverse selection of northern and southern Napa Valley vineyards are also selected to broaden the wine’s floral and spicy characteristics. The Merlot is grown in Oak Knoll, and a selection of southern valley floor Cabernet Sauvignon fruit makes up the balance of the blend.

Vintage Notes

The 2013 vintage began with a warm, dry spring that brought early bud break and created ideal conditions for flowering and fruit set. With no surprises throughout the growing season, temperatures were consistently favorable and even, resulting in notably healthy vines as fruit went through veraison and started ripening. The overall dry season made for an early and condensed harvest.

Winemaking Notes

Maceration and fermentation followed suit for each of the varieties, which allowed winemaker Christophe Paubert to monitor and evaluate each lot individually, coaxing each varietal to its maximum potential. The wine aged in oak for 16 months - the Petite Sirah in American oak barrels (25% new) while the Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec went to French oak (30% new). The final assemblage was blended just prior to bottling.
