Vintage 2012
Wine Type Red
Varietal Cabernet Sauvignon
Region Napa Valley
Winemaker Christophe Paubert

Layered, lush and blackberry-driven, this Cabernet Sauvignon is a beautiful example of Napa Cabernet from the near perfect 2012 vintage.

92 Points - International Wine Report

"The wine opens with aromas of black olive, blackberry, anise and coffee. There are lovely flavors of anise, cassis, mocha and graphite with an acid backbone that begs for another sip. Lightly tannic, this solid bottling improves after an hour of aeration and would be a heavy steakhouse player, paring beautifully with a rich ribeye steak. While this has a long life ahead of it, it is hard to resist now.” - Owen Bargreen, November 2015

90 Points - Wine Enthusiast

"Rounded by small amounts of Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot, this Cab is earthy and lean on entry, before developing in the glass into juicy dark cherry and leathery notes. Smooth, integrated oak and tannin leave an impression in terms of texture, with a persistence of tannin on the finish.” - Virginie Boone, November 2015

Tasting Notes

Layered, lush and blackberry-driven, this Cabernet Sauvignon is a beautiful example of Napa Cabernet from the near perfect 2012 vintage. The wine shows classic black currant, black cherry and plum flavors with interwoven notes of black pepper, licorice, caramel and chocolate. Refined, persistent tannins and crisp, fresh flavors provide focus and balance through the wine’s extraordinary concentration and texture.

Vineyard Notes

Cabernet Sauvignon is synonymous with Napa Valley and has always been a mainstay in the winemaking program at Stags’ Leap Winery. Our Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a combination of estate fruit and grapes from select Napa Valley growers with a focus on sourcing from the valley floor. Winemaker Christophe Paubert selects fruit that is similar in expression to the grapes from the Stags’ Leap estate, avoiding fruit from areas he considers to be too warm and instead sourcing grapes from the southern part of Napa Valley, where the climate is cooler. This strategic sourcing ensures the focus and character for which Stags’ Leap Cabernet Sauvignons are known.

Vintage Notes

The 2012 vintage will be remembered for its abundance of high-quality fruit. The season began with exceptional, moderate weather that brought virtually no harm to the grapes all the way through fruit-set, and the long, mild days continued well into the summer. A cooler-than-normal period hit at the end of September, which allowed for the preservation of ideal fruit aromatics, freshness and natural acidity.

Winemaking Notes

The first several weeks of a wine’s life are crucial. While the handpicked grapes for this wine were undergoing fermentation and maceration, Christophe and his team tasted and tested each lot daily to determine the pump overs regime, how much air the wine needed, and the best temperature to optimize maceration and extraction. After pressing off the skins, 37% of the wine went into new French oak barrels while the remainder went to seasoned French oak; this combination preserves freshness and gives the fruit more room to express itself. The wine aged for 20 months prior to bottling.
