“Aromatically and flavor-wise, it’s massive. Intense tiers of blackcurrants and cassis liqueur, blueberry jam, candied violets, mocha and umami plum sauce, with an earthy hint of green olives. It’s all accented by the smoky sweetness of 50% new French oak barrel aging for 20 months. As sweetly fruited as it is, the finish is entirely, and satisfyingly, dry. The mouthfeel is full-bodied and elegant, with great weight and depth, and an alcohol level of only 14.1%. Delicious! A great accomplishment! Super-impressive!” - Steve Heimoff, February 2017

“The volcanic soils at the base of the Stags Leap escarpment produced a 2013 with the meatiness of steak tartare. It’s a wine of cool intensity, the boldness of flavor based on lasting root-like spice and high notes of red fruit. Those flavors buzz over a firm base of tannins, infusing the wine with freshness and setting it up to age well for the next five years.” - Josh Greene, February, 2017

"Another amazingly youthful wine is the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon The Leap, meant for 25-30+ years of longevity. Opaque purple, with loads of blueberry, blackcurrant and black cherry fruit, some licorice, smoke and graphite, the wine has terrific intensity, a full-bodied mouthfeel and a long finish. Give it 4-5 years and drink it over the following 25." - Robert Parker, December 2016

"Lushly rich on both the nose and the palate, this wine from the heart of the appellation is etched in chocolate and cedar, showing a ying-yang pull between savory and sweet. Currant and dried herb season chalky, firm tannin and toasted oak." - Virginie Boone, February 2017
Our 2013 The Leap Cabernet Sauvignon captures the distinctive personality of our estate
vineyard and the outstanding vintage gave great intensity to the multilayered mouthfeel and
deep, pure richness. The wine offers blackberry, black plum, blueberry, cassis and cocoa, and
shows a beautiful balance of complexity and elegance. With fine tannins, this Cabernet exhibits
the iconic power and longevity that have become synonymous with Stags’ Leap estate wines.
Cabernet Sauvignon is synonymous with the Stags Leap District and has always been a mainstay in the winemaking program at Stags’ Leap Winery. The Leap is sourced from select Cabernet Sauvignon blocks within our Stags’ Leap Winery estate vineyard. This singular expanse of earth tucked up against the eastern palisades of Napa Valley features thin, rocky soils in its upper reaches, giving way to finer-grained loamy soils at its floor. The heat-reflecting palisades, with their towering rocky crags, provide consistent warmth over the estate and help balance the cooling breezes from the south. This pronounced micro-climate is remarkably well-suited to growing Cabernet Sauvignon grapes of distinction.
The 2013 vintage began with a warm, dry spring that brought early bud break and created ideal conditions for flowering and fruit set. With no surprises throughout the growing season, temperatures were consistently favorable and even, resulting in notably healthy vines as fruit went through veraison and started ripening. The overall dry season made for an early and condensed harvest, and was ideal for producing fresh Cabernet Sauvignons.
The Leap is a barrel selection, a blend of the best Cabernet Sauvignon blocks, lots and cooperages in a given vintage. Each lot was held separately in French oak barrels (50% new) for 20 months before Winemaker Christophe Paubert hand selected the most expressive of them to blend just prior to bottling. Keeping each block separate allows close monitoring of each individual lot through aging, maximizing the depth and potential of the estate vineyards.
