93 Points - Wine & Spirits

"As beefy as a rib eye, this wine feels cool and generous. It seems to shrug off any pretense and makeup, presenting a vinous reality of tart black cherry flavors and lean tobacco scents. The flavors come into firm focus in the end, where the wine shows its refinement- Joshua Greene, February 2013

Tasting Notes

Aromatic intensity and flavor concentration define our 2009 The Leap Cabernet Sauvignon, which displays well-delineated flavors of black cherry, blueberry and cassis. With silky tannins that spread warmly over the palate, the fruit is lifted by the restrained use of oak and buttressed with notes of fresh herbs, licorice and coffee bean. This is an iconic Stags’ Leap Winery Cabernet that showcases our longstanding heritage and commitment to meticulous winegrowing.

Vineyard Notes

Cabernet Sauvignon is synonymous with the Stags Leap District and has always been a mainstay in the winemaking program at Stags’ Leap Winery. The Leap is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from select blocks within our Stags’ Leap Winery estate vineyard. This singular expanse of earth tucked up against the eastern palisades of Napa Valley features thin, rocky soils in its upper reaches, giving way to finer-grained loamy soils at its floor. The heat-reflecting palisades, with their towering rocky crags, provide consistent warmth over the estate and help balance the cooling breezes from the south.  This pronounced micro-climate is remarkably well-suited to growing Cabernet Sauvignon grapes of distinction.

Vintage Notes

The 2009 growing season in Napa Valley was notable for its lack of significant weather events. A dry winter gave way to rains in early spring, and temperate weather at the time of bud break brought little in the way of frost damage. Flowering and fruit set were facilitated by dry weather in late spring, and a relatively moderate summer gave the fruit ample time to ripen slowly to its full potential. There was a brief rain event in early/mid-October, but by that time the vast majority of the grapes were safely in the winery.

Winemaking Notes

The Leap is a barrel selection, a blend of the best Cabernet Sauvignon blocks, lots and sub-lots in a given vintage. The 2009 was selected from over 20 blocks and numerous lots held separately in French oak barrels for 20 months and blended just prior to bottling. Keeping the lots separate allows Winemaker Christophe Paubert to evaluate and “grow” each lot individually, coaxing each to its maximum potential. A mix of fifty percent new and seasoned barrels allows the oak to “broadcast” but never overshadow the fruit.
