This lovely, ruby-red–hued 2023 Napa Cabernet showcases a vibrant and expressive nose, offering layers of red, blue and black berries, dried herbs, and cherry wood, lifted by warm baking spice notes and a floral potpourri bouquet. As it unfolds, black cherry, red plum, red currant, and raspberry mingle with subtler tones of almond skin and walnut husk.The palate leans savory, showing a graceful balance of earthiness and toasty oak, with a lovely thread of complexity throughout. The first several weeks of a wine’s life are crucial. While the grapes for this wine were undergoing fermentation and maceration, our winemaking team tasted and analyzed each lot daily to determine the pump overs regime, how much air the wine needed, and the best temperature to optimize maceration and extraction. After pressing off the skins for 3-4 weeks, 27% of the wine went into new French oak barrels while the remainder went to seasoned neutral French and American oak; this combination preserves freshness and gives the fruit more room to express itself. The wine aged for 18 months prior to bottling.
Cabernet Sauvignon is synonymous with Napa Valley and has always been a mainstay in the winemaking program at Stags’ Leap Winery. Our Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a combination of grapes from select Napa Valley growers with a focus on sourcing from the valley floor. Our winemaker selects fruit that is similar in expression to the grapes from the Stags’ Leap estate, avoiding fruit from areas he considers to be too warm and instead sourcing grapes from the southern part of Napa Valley, where the climate is cooler. This strategic sourcing ensures the focus and character for which Stags’ Leap Cabernet Sauvignons are known.

Our 2023 Vintage
2023 delivered one of the most prolonged and compact harvest seasons in recent years within the Napa Valley. The extended growing season delayed the start of harvest until the fifth of September—a notable two and a half weeks later than the previous year. This posed a logistical challenge in the cellar as tanks quickly filled and there was concern about completing harvest before the onset of the rainy season. Despite the challenges, our winemaking team rose to the occasion, and the 2023 harvest season delivered a bountiful yield of exceptional quality fruit. The grapes displayed intense color and complex flavors, maintaining a vibrant acidity that adds a distinctive character to what is sure to be remembered as a wine collector’s vintage.
