Stags’ Leap The Bookkeeper exemplifies the depth and complexity achieved when four Bordeaux-heritage grape varieties from Napa Valley are masterfully combined into a singular, distinctive wine. A deep black cherry hue hints at the richness of dark fruit within. On the nose, aromas of dried cherry and raspberry intertwine with tobacco and are elevated by Mediterranean hillside notes of bay laurel, juniper, and rosemary, creating a breathtaking bouquet garni. Though lifted by bright acidity, the palate delves deeper into juicy blue, black, and boysenberry fruit, while supple, velvety tannins tease out a dark chocolate undertone that lingers through the long, elegant finish.

The lots were kept separate throughout fermentation and aging, allowing our winemakers to evaluate each individually, coaxing them to maximum potential and complexity. The lots were then aged in French oak barrels (70% new) for 21 months and blended just prior to bottling. The custom-toasted, very low-impact barrels supported the wine during maturation but did not impart undue flavors.
This limited-production red blend, available only at our winery, combined reserve-quality grapes to create a concentrated, lush fruit expression with softer tannins for relatively early enjoyment. The Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot were sourced in the cooler, southern valley floor vineyards of Napa Valley, while the Malbec and Merlot were sourced from Oakville and the Oak Knoll District respectively.

Our 2022 Vintage
The first half of the 2022 harvest started calm and early, with healthy vineyards offering fruit with bright acidity, fruit-forward flavors, and strong yields for white varietals and thin-skinned reds, like Pinot Noir. Then, California experienced a historic heat wave in early September that ramped up the pace of ripening, compelling a fast and furious harvest as winemakers worked to pick fruit at its best
quality. Fortunately, strong vines and proactive irrigation helped many vineyards survive the heat. The second half was much more predictable with cooler temperatures through October, so that later-ripening red varieties, such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, could develop their full flavor and tannin profile.
