This Stags’ Leap Coombsville Cabernet Sauvignon is a trove of opaque garnet in the glass, where a savory herbal character, the warm seasoning of dried thyme and oregano notes, permeates its full, rich blackberry, bramble, and dried cherry aromas. Its palate is awash with juicy plum and brightened by tart Bing cherry flavors that stream with refreshing acidity. Hints of nutmeg, cardamom, and light toast are touches of the well-integrated oak. Rich and velvety with polished tannins, this wine is grounded by a stone flintiness that marks its lengthy fruit finish, with a taste of black licorice lingering long after. Enjoy this plush Cabernet with hearty dishes such as lamb ragu, cassoulet, and wild mushroom risotto.

This small bottling of Coombsville Cabernet Sauvignon is a barrel selection of the most expressive lots from this highly regarded appellation. Each component of this blend was aged separately in French oak barrels (55% new) for 18 months and blended just prior to bottling. Custom-toasted, very low impact barrels of new French oak were hand selected, which supported the wine during maturation but did not impart excessive flavors. Keeping the lots separate throughout aging allowed our winemakers to monitor and evaluate each lot individually, coaxing each to its maximum potential and complexity. The winemakers also take special care in the management of extraction during the maceration period to keep this wine a very concentrated and approachable Cabernet, truly expressive and representative of the Coombsville terroir.
Our winemakers have always admired the Cabernet Sauvignon fruit from Coombsville for its concentration and fresh aromatics, referring to it as “the Pauillac” of Napa Valley. Year after year, the appellation yields some of the most concentrated and distinctive Cabernet Sauvignon in Napa Valley, with the 2012 vintage marking the inaugural release of this small-lot bottling. This wine captures a pure expression of Napa’s southeastern corner and its unique elevation and cooler terroir. long-standing relationships with some of the most highly regarded growers in Coombsville ensure this wine exemplifies the excellent structure, concentrated fresh flavors, and significant tannins of this celebrated appellation.

Our 2022 Vintage
The first half of the 2022 harvest started calm and early, with healthy vineyards offering fruit with bright acidity, fruit-forward flavors, and strong yields for white varietals and thin-skinned reds. Then, California experienced a historic heat wave in early September that ramped up the pace of ripening, compelling a fast and furious harvest as winemakers worked to pick fruit at its best quality. Fortunately, strong vines and proactive irrigation helped many vineyards buffer the heat. The second half was much more predictable with cooler temperatures through October, so that later-ripening red varieties, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, could develop their full flavor and tannin profile.
