Named in honor of the lady of the Stags’ Leap manor, the 2020 Amparo Rosé is alluring with a style all its own, incredibly inviting with a vibrant watermelon pink hue and fragrant aromas of strawberry crème, white peach and delicate rose petal. On the palate, this Grenache-based rosé springs forward with a bounty of bright cherry, red raspberry and orange blossom notes supported by a silky texture and mouthwatering finish. Small amounts of Syrah add fruit intensity to the blend while also adding depth of color and a touch of complexity. Made in a dry style, this fresh and zesty rosé is the perfect accompaniment to a variety of dishes and cuisines, or is the perfect refreshing aperitif to enjoy on its own.

After a 24-hour maceration period designed to extract color and flavor from the freshly-harvested grapes, the juice was gently “bled” off the skins in a traditional saignée method of rosé winemaking. Fermentation followed in neutral oak barrels to capture the varietal’s natural acidity and delicate fruit flavors. The young wine was racked off the lees immediately after fermentation to preserve its freshness and aged for three months in neutral oak barrels.
For Christophe Paubert, Winemaker and General Manager at Stags’ Leap Winery, the identity of a wine is found through the terroir. Christophe’s career has spanned the industry from sales to winemaking, and his impressive background includes positions at Chateau d’Yquem and Gruaud-Larose as well as projects in Chile, Spain and Washington State. But it was the terroir of Stags’ Leap that drew him to California.
The 2020 season will be remembered for factors beyond the typical harvest season. It was a warm, dry winter and the rain and cooler weather didn’t arrive until the end of March. While the mild spring season was a great early start, our winery working conditions had extensive safety protocols due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Summer brought very cool mornings and very warm days, but then harvest was interrupted by wildfires across California, which came as grapes started to be picked, and we were very fortunate that none of our vineyards were in the areas of the active fires. The white wine harvest started in early August, the wines are showing excellent development in cellars, reflecting the fine vintage year. While the red wine harvest will be smaller yielding, and proved to be one of the most challenging in history, but our winemakers remained optimistic and very complimentary of the high quality achieved from this unprecedented vintage.
Made from 85% Grenache, with most of the fruit coming from Gamble Ranch Vineyard, located mid-valley in Oakville. Originating from the Rector Creek alluvial fan near Oakville, the rocky soil of this vineyard produces Grenache grapes of wonderful intensity, ideal for our rosé. The remaining portion of Grenache comes from the Frediani Vineyard, located in Calistoga. Based in the northernmost part of Napa Valley, this warm region vineyard consistently produces some of the most refined Grenache grapes that Winemaker Christophe Paubert has ever tasted. The Syrah is sourced from Three Hills Vineyard in Oak Knoll and is blended in to help round out the complexity of the wine. Finally, the Mourvedre is sourced from Stanton Vineyards in St. Helena and provides color and flavor intensity.
