Inspired by the 2011 Winemaker's Muse bottling of Malbec, this is the seventh vintage of this winery exclusive Malbec. A significant part of historic blends at Stags' Leap, Malbec flourishes in certain areas and this wine captures the variety's powerful fruit and spicy characteristics.
The 2019 Napa Valley Malbec is deep, rich, and alluring, with expressive notes of blueberry pie, black plum, acai berry, and crème de cassis, alongside hints of black pepper spice, cedar, and subtle wild rose. Plush and inviting on the palate, with blackberry, dark raspberry, and delicate floral notes, supported by warming notes of graham cracker, sweet tobacco spice, and bittersweet chocolate. This multilayered wine interweaves fine-grained tannins and a silky sinuous texture perfectly. Dive into the abundance of dark fruit flavors and fresh aromatics - sip, savor ,and repeat – while enjoying this sumptuous, well-structured, and fully enveloping Napa Valley malbec.
The 2019 harvest started one to two weeks later than previous years, mostly due to February rains, but because the vines were in their winter dormancy, it did not affect the 2019 crop. Spring continued to be wet with some rain during flowering, followed by cool temperatures that allowed the grapes to mature gradually. Most grapes ripened at lower sugars, thanks to the extended, cool growing season, and winemakers were pleased with the full flavors, fresh acidity, and superb balance of the 2019 fruit. The resulting crop showed a modest yield with a slightly more compact structure and extract than in previous years.
The Malbec grapes for this bottling are sourced from across Napa Valley, including Oakville, St. Helena, Yountville, and Calistoga AVAs. Sourcing from these appellations within Napa Valley provided a Malbec that is bright and fresh with vibrant acidity, alongside the typical plush dark fruit characteristics.
Winemaker Christophe Paubert practiced simple methods to show how this rare variety can excel in Napa Valley. The wine was fermented and aged in 40% new French oak barrels for 18 months, to preserve the pure expression and freshness of the Malbec fruit.
For Christophe Paubert, Winemaker and General Manager at Stags’ Leap Winery, the identity of a wine is found through the terroir. Christophe’s career has spanned the industry from sales to winemaking, and his impressive background includes positions at Chateau d’Yquem and Gruaud-Larose as well as projects in Chile, Spain and Washington State. But it was the terroir of Stags’ Leap that drew him to California.
