The 2022 The Leap Cabernet Sauvignon greets the eye with a deep, dark ruby color and a nose that is both intense and elegant. Aromas of ripe black cherry, blackberry, and dark plum are complemented by hints of violet, black pepper, and toasted oak. The wine’s complexity continues on the palate, where rich flavors of black raspberry, cassis, and ripe plum unfold, balanced by secondary notes of dark chocolate, espresso, and cedar. The mouthfeel is full-bodied with velvety tannins, which provide a plush texture and a long, satisfying finish. The natural acidity gives the wine a sense of freshness, while the wine’s deep, powerful flavors showcase the depth of the estate’s terroir. Though it is wonderfully expressive now, this wine is built for aging, with the potential to evolve beautifully over the next 10-15 years.

The Leap is a barrel selection, a blend of the best Cabernet Sauvignon blocks, lots, and cooperages in each vintage. Each lot underwent a long maceration period which added color, tannin, and complexity of flavor. Additionally, each lot was held separately in French oak barrels before our winemakers hand-selected the most expressive to blend just prior to bottling. Keeping each block-separate allows close monitoring of each individual lot through aging, maximizing the depth and potential of the estate vineyards.
The 2022 The Leap Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from the Stags' Leap Winery Estate Vineyard, situated in the heart of the renowned Stags' Leap District. This unique region, defined by rocky, heat-reflecting soils, enjoys a microclimate that balances warmth from the eastern palisades with cooling breezes from the south. The vineyard's 30-year-old vines thrive in this environment, producing fruit of incredible depth and complexity. The harvest was selective and focused on achieving optimal ripeness, which was enhanced by the cooler conditions after the rain, ensuring that the wine is both expressive and structured.

Our 2022 Vintage
The first half of the 2022 harvest started calm and early, with healthy vineyards offering fruit with bright acidity, fruit-forward flavors, and strong yields for white varietals and thin-skinned reds, like Pinot Noir. Then, California experienced a historic heat wave in early September that ramped up the pace of ripening, compelling a fast and furious harvest as winemakers worked to pick fruit at its best quality. Fortunately, strong vines and proactive irrigation helped many vineyards survive the heat. The second half was much more predictable with cooler temperatures through October, so that later-ripening red varieties, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, could develop their full flavor and tannin profile.
