Held within a black core ringed by a vivid purple hue, Stags’ Leap Ne Cede Malis is an iconoclastic wine unto its own. Aromas from the 2022 vintage rise from the glass like a tuneful jazz arrangement: serene floral notes of rose and violet play first, then bergamot picks up the tempo, followed by a steady riff of raspberry and rhubarb that’s punctuated by a bass note blast of tropical papaya. On the palate, blood orange, raspberry, black plum, and dried blueberry flavors pop with a waft of hickory smoke that diffuses into a spectrum of wild sage, cocoa powder, and freshly roasted coffee bean. This impression is sustained by big, chewy tannins and bright, taut acidity, which gives structure to the weight of this complex wine and buoys the fruit through its rich finish. A perennial favorite with grilled steak, this wine will also pair exceptionally well with lamb couscous, spicy merguez sausages, and decadent chocolate desserts.

Taking a minimalist approach, our winemakers like to say that they “guide” rather than “make” Ne Cede Malis. The carefully tended, head-trained vines in this 3.5-acre single block include predominantly Petite Sirah, with a few vines of Carignane, Mourvedre, Grenache, Peloursin, Syrah, Muscat, and Sauvignon Blanc, among others. After hand-picking, the grapes were co-fermented, undergoing a gentle but thorough skin maceration prior to aging in American oak barrels (40% new) for 14 months. The oak’s spiciness is easily handled by this powerful wine, enhancing its strength and depth.
"Ne cede malis,” Latin for “Don’t give in to misfortune,” is the family motto of Stags’ Leap Founder Horace Chase. Sourced from the oldest block on our estate with vines originally planted in 1929, the wine is predominantly Petite Sirah with small amounts of at least 15 other varietals. Year after year this gracefully aging block produces a small amount of wine – a truly unique field blend that simply could not be produced anywhere else.

Our 2022 Vintage
The first half of the 2022 harvest started calm and early, with healthy vineyards offering fruit with bright acidity, fruit-forward flavors, and strong yields for white varietals and thin-skinned reds. Then, California experienced a historic heat wave in early September that ramped up the pace of ripening, compelling a fast and furious harvest as winemakers worked to pick fruit at its best quality. Fortunately, strong vines and proactive irrigation helped many vineyards survive the heat. The second half was much more predictable with cooler temperatures through October, so that later-ripening red varieties, such as Petite Sirah, could develop their full flavor and tannin profile.
