Named #61 on James Suckling's Top 100 Wines of the USA 2025
95 Points- “Plush and generous aromas of Damson plums, citrus peel, iodine and tea leaves. This is full-bodied with soft tannins and balanced acidity, giving flavors of mocha, blackberry compote, purple flowers and dried herbs. Soft yet serious.” – JamesSuckling.com
This Merlot opens with an alluring bouquet of dark plum, violet, tea leaf, and a delicate touch of dried rosemary. The palate is round and inviting, with glossy tannins and a harmonious blend of mocha and dark fruit flavors that flow seamlessly alongside layers of boysenberry, blackberry, and mocha. The luscious dark berry fruit core is complemented by a polished texture that leads to savory notes of sage, Bay Laurel, and black olives, adding depth and complexity to this mouth-pleasing, juicy wine. The wine finishes rich and flavorful with deep, refined notes of espresso, dark chocolate, and crushed stone that showcase the intriguing nature of Napa Valley’s 2022 vintage.
Vintage:
2022
Appellation:
Napa Valley
Varietal:
Merlot
Blend:
91% Merlot, 5% Petite Sirah, 4% Malbec
Oak treatment:
100% French oak (25% new) for 19 months
The grapes underwent a two- to three-week maceration period designed to extract ideal flavor, color, and tannin from the skins. Using traditional techniques, our winemakers aged this Merlot in high-quality French oak barrels (25% new) for 19 months. The new oak imparts structure, ageability, and a slight spice complexity that still allows the fresh fruit flavors to take center stage.
Our Napa Valley Merlot is crafted with grapes from vineyards in the southern part of the region. Fruit from Oak Knoll makes up most of the blend, with the remaining fruit sourced from the Oakville appellation as well as our very own Stags Leap District. Merlot can lose its varietal identity when exposed to too much heat, but fruit from these select, southerly vineyards exhibits varietal expressions of fresh fruit character, structure, and bright acidity.

Our 2022 Vintage
The 2022 harvest started calm and early, with healthy vineyards offering bright acidity and fruit-forward flavors. Then in early September, when an historic heat wave ramped up the pace of ripening, winemakers worked fast and furious to pick fruit at its best quality. Fortunately, strong, irrigated vines helped the vineyards survive the heat and the second half of harvest was cooler and more predictable, allowing later-ripening Merlot to develop its full flavor and tannin profile.
