The Bookkeeper is a tribute to the winery’s former owner, Fred Grange, who served as an accountant to several Prohibition-era entrepreneurs and reimagined the Manor House as an exclusive retreat for San Francisco’s well-to-do.
A classic Meritage wine, Stags’ Leap The Bookkeeper compounds the complexity of Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot’s round juiciness, Malbec’s body, and Petit Verdot’s acid structure to yield a synergistic, balanced blend in the Bordeaux blending tradition. Its rich, inviting nose presents earthy scents of forest fern, button mushroom, wet stone, and blackberry, which seep into elderberry, dark plum, and the blonde tobacco aromas of a warm and welcoming cigar shop. Ripe strawberry, cassis, and bright passion fruit flavors slurry with big chewy tannins on the dense palate entry until released by a sluice of acidity through descending levels of toasty oak to a red cherry finish. Age this wine for up to 20 years or decant to enjoy now with flame-grilled ribeye or porcini mushroom lasagna.

The lots were kept separate throughout fermentation and aging, allowing our winemakers to evaluate each individually, coaxing them to maximum potential and complexity. The lots were then aged for 21 months in a mix of 57% new French oak barrels and 43% older seasoned barrels, and blended
just prior to bottling. The custom-toasted, very low-impact barrels supported the wine during maturation but did not impart undue flavors.
This limited-production red blend, available only at our winery, combines reserve-quality grapes to create a concentrated, lush fruit expression with softer tannins. The Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot were sourced in the cooler, southern valley floor vineyards of Napa Valley, while the Malbec and Merlot were sourced from Oakville and the Oak Knoll District respectively.

Our 2023 Vintage
2023 delivered one of the most prolonged and compact harvest seasons in recent years within the Napa Valley. The extended growing season delayed the start of harvest until the fifth of September—a notable two and a half weeks later than the previous year. This posed a logistical challenge in the cellar as tanks quickly filled and there was concern about completing harvest before the onset of the rainy season. Despite the challenges, our winemaking team rose to the occasion, and the 2023 harvest season delivered a bountiful yield of exceptional quality fruit. The grapes displayed intense color and complex flavors, maintaining a vibrant acidity that adds a distinctive character to what is sure to be remembered as a wine collector’s vintage.
