A moody, black currant shade belies the bright, fresh, and boisterous nature of this Stags’ Leap 2023 Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon. It hints at the wine’s nose, which showcases a pure cassis scent framed within scrolls of manzanita and balsam aromas. The succulent palate features ripe strawberry, sweet cherry, and red currant flavors that tumble exuberantly with muscular tannins and acrobatic acidity on a structure of well-integrated oak, setting the stage for a finale of soaring red fruit notes roped with sage. Enjoy this sensational Cabernet upon release with equally flavorful dishes such as moussaka, osso buco, or margarita pizza.

This Cabernet Sauvignon is a barrel selection of the most expressive lots from the Oakville appellation. It was aged for 21 months in a mix of 51% new, French oak barrels and 49% older, seasoned barrels, and blended just prior to bottling. Keeping the lots separate throughout fermentation and aging allowed Winemaker Ludovic Dervin to monitor and evaluate each lot individually, coaxing each to its maximum potential and complexity.
Located in the heart of Napa Valley, Oakville has the ideal climate and soils for Cabernet Sauvignon. Fruit from the Oakville appellation has been the backbone of our esteemed Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon for many years. This Cabernet comes from Gamble Ranch, a historic location within the valley, situated just off Oakville Cross Road and Silverado Trail, in close proximity to our Stags’ Leap estate. The rocky soils here comprise alluvium derived from volcanic, metamorphic, and sedimentary rock, as well as some volcanic parent material weathering in place.

“Enticing and perfumed, with lovely depth of fruit and aromas of red and black currants, bay laurel, cured meat, wet earth and a savory edge. The palate is full-bodied with chewy yet refined tannins and mouthwatering acidity that leads to a fruit- and earth-driven finish. Nicely constructed, with just a touch of petit verdot for structure. Plenty of early drinking appeal, but it’s also ageworthy. Drink or hold.” -JamesSuckling.com
Our 2023 Vintage
2023 delivered one of the most prolonged and compact harvest seasons in recent years within the Napa Valley. The extended growing season delayed the start of harvest until the fifth of September—a notable two and a half weeks later than the previous year. This posed a logistical challenge in the cellar as tanks quickly filled and there was concern about completing harvest before the onset of the rainy season.
Despite the challenges, our winemaking team rose to the occasion, and the 2023 harvest season delivered a bountiful yield of exceptional quality fruit. The grapes displayed intense color and complex flavors, maintaining a vibrant acidity that adds a distinctive character to what is sure to be remembered as a wine collector’s vintage.
