This vintage of Petite Sirahis expressive and alluring with a fragrant fruit-forward nose of ripe blackberry, black raspberry, black cherry, and stewed strawberries. The palate is full and robust with notes of blackberry preserves, dark plum and subtle hints of Black Mission fig. Intriguing oak spice notes provide a sense of warmth with delicate flavors of vanilla, caramel, and cedar. There’s a beautiful rusticity to this wine with notes of earth and floral dried rose petal and violet. The mouthfeel is buoyant and bright with juicy acidity and an abundance of dark berry fruit. Rounded tannins provide a balanced structure leading to a long and pleasing finish.

Continuing the same time-honored techniques that have made Petite Sirah one of our winery’s staples, our winemakers practiced simple and traditional methods to show the uniqueness of the Petite Sirah fruit. Avoiding over extraction, the wine went through a relatively short maceration period (9-12 days on average) that included fermentation. The wine aged for 16 months in American oak barrels (20% new), allowing the spiciness of the oak to complement the natural spice character of the varietal.
Grapes from across Napa Valley are sourced for this vintage of Petite Sirah. Our winemakers carefully select fruit from northern vineyards in Calistoga as well as mid-valley vineyards in Oak Knoll, Oakville, and Yountville. This vineyard sourcing adds flavor intensity and broadens the wine’s profile, adding hints of floral, spice and fruit-forward characteristics. Petite Sirah is a varietal that is enhanced by the deliberate diversity of vineyard sites.

Our 2022 Vintage
The first half of the 2022 harvest started calm and early, with healthy vineyards offering fruit with bright acidity, fruit-forward flavors, and strong yields for white varietals and thin-skinned reds, like Pinot Noir. Then, California experienced a historic heat wave in early September that ramped up the pace of ripening, compelling a fast and furious harvest as winemakers worked to pick fruit at its best quality. Fortunately, strong vines and proactive irrigation helped many vineyards survive the heat. The second half was much more predictable with cooler temperatures through October, so that later-ripening red varieties, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, could develop their full flavor and tannin profile.
